A J-1 visa is a nonimmigrant visa issued by the United States government to international students, scholars, exchange visitors, and short-term workers. J-1 visa recipients must have a sponsoring organization (such as a college or university, private organization, or government entity) and meet certain eligibility requirements, such as proficiency in the English language, to be considered for this exchange program.

Yes! U.S. government regulations require all J-1 visa holders and their dependents to obtain medical insurance that covers both everyday health needs (such as minor illnesses and prescription drugs) and emergency care.

Check with your sponsoring organization first to determine whether it has preselected a medical insurance plan for you to purchase. If it has not, you are responsible for purchasing a plan with adequate coverage.

Please note that your sponsoring organization will need to show the U.S. Department of State that your policy meets its medical insurance requirements before you leave your home country.

The U.S. State Department requires J-1 visa exchange participants and their dependents be enrolled in an insurance plan with the following coverage, at minimum:

  • 每次事故或疾病至少100,000美元的医疗保险金
  • 遗体遣返费用为25,000美元
  • 与将患者送回本国接受医疗救治相关的费用,金额为50,000美元
  • A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness

Please be sure to check with your program sponsor to learn whether it provides group medical coverage. If not, reach out to Lewerglobal for help choosing a plan.

Children under 21 years of age and spouses accompanying J-1 visa holders to the U.S. receive J-2 visas. J-2 visa holders are also required to meet the same medical insurance requirements set forth by the U.S. as J-1 visa holders.

Check with your program sponsor or insurance provider to see if they offer a group insurance plan that can cover J-2 dependents.

First, check with your sponsoring organization to learn whether it has preselected a medical insurance plan for you to enroll in. If not, and you need to purchase J-1 visa medical insurance, Lewerglobal offers plans to choose from.
