Frequently Asked Questions

After graduation, your student medical coverage through school may end, and you might not start employment in the U.S. right away. Even once your job begins, medical coverage through your employer may not begin until after a waiting period. This gap in insurance puts you at financial risk should you need medical attention or emergency care.

Temporary medical insurance helps protect you from unexpected medical bills. You stay covered while you wait for employer benefits to start.

Yes! Until you are certain that you will start at a job providing medical coverage right away, we recommend buying 90 days of coverage from your graduation date. Then, you can extend for more time if needed.

As you approach graduation, check whether your current student medical plan covers you during the 60‑day grace period before OPT begins. If it does not, you should enroll in insurance to cover that time.

If you secure an OPT position before your student medical plan ends, check when your employer’s medical benefits begin before canceling your current coverage. There is often a short gap between your start date and when employer coverage becomes active.
